Family therapy

Family therapy is helpful in a variety of situations…

Divorce or separations cause every person in a family to suffer to some degree. Family and/or individual counseling is important when parents/partners are separating. Too often adults believe the kids "are doing fine" through this difficult period. However, it is likely that the kids are working hard not to show their feelings for fear of causing more problems. On the other hand, some children act out when parents are separating or divorcing in an attempt to get help for the entire family by drawing attention to themselves. If your family is experiencing a separation or divorce, family counseling can help each person to work through their feelings about the situation in a safe environment.

Whenever there are substance abuse or dependence problems with a family member, the entire family needs counseling. Addiction affects every member of a family and every member of that family needs a safe place to vent their feelings and to learn to cope with the addict and the addiction.

Educational problems often disrupt the entire family as too much attention may be focused on the child having educational problems. Other children may feel left out and begin to behave badly in an attempt to get attention. Some children work hard to behave "perfectly" so as to avoid the kind of attention they see the child with the educational problem receiving.

Behavioral problems disrupt the entire family as the child who is misbehaving is often the center of attention. Other children may feel left out and begin to behave badly in an attempt to get attention. Conversely, some children work hard to behave "perfectly" so as to avoid the kind of attention they see the child with the behavior problem receiving. Family counseling helps parents learn to deal with behavioral problems in ways that are good for each member of the family.

Chronic illness affects every member of a family. Every member of that family needs a safe place to vent their feelings and to learn to cope with the illness. Family therapy provides that safe place.

The death of a family member destroys the balance in a family. Each person deals with death differently and each person deserves the opportunity to express their grief with the help of trained professionals. Family therapy helps survivors deal with their sadness and any unresolved feelings in a safe and supportive environment.
